🌑 Introduction to these allies:
This potent, wild & pungent tincture represents the power of these deeply sacred Indigenous allies. There is so much magic & medicine that happens when they are combined: the synergy of Devil’s Club & Ghost Pipe both balance & further enhance each other. Both connected to the dark mysteries of the unseen, growing in the dark, dense rainforest of the Pacific Northwest.
Where Ghost Pipe & Devil’s Club grow is thought of as sacred grounds. Perhaps grounds where the ghosts of witches or healers met in the past. They are spirit allies that walk between the worlds. Ghost Pipe lives beneath the Earth as Devil’s Clubs spikes pierce through the portals.
Known as some of the most powerful pain relieving herbs, they also help relax an overactive mind & hypervigilant nervous system. Devil's Club is a deeply protective ally, with giant, sharp, needle-like thorns/spines, helping us conjure inner strength & hold firm boundaries. Ghost Pipe shares a very unique & fragile symbiosis with the mycorrhizal fungus. Through the mushrooms, it receives its nourishment & wisdom from the roots of mighty Oak trees.
I had the privilege of harvesting both of these allies in the Oregon rainforest along with my recently deceased herbal teacher, it felt fitting this Samhain, to make this offering in his honor. (read more in the disclaimer at the end of the listing)
✨ Ghost Pipe ~ also known as Indian Pipe or Corpse Plant, is a deeply sacred ally to the Indigenous Peoples of this region, growing in the dense, moist rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. It is a magical ally, in that it is unlike any other plant. Often mistaken as a mushroom, Ghost Pipe has a white *ghostly* appearance as it lacks chlorophyll - the green pigment that allows most plants to photosynthesize. Ghost Pipe shares a very fragile symbiosis relationship with the mycorrhizal fungus. The fungus passes necessary nutrients to the Ghost Pipe through the host tree’s root system, allowing the plant to indirectly get its energy through photosynthesis of the host tree. Therefore Ghost Pipe cannot be transplanted or grown in a garden, the symbiotic conditions of the fungi and tree realms must possess the perfect conditions, and this can only be found in the wild. Due to Ghost Pipe’s ability to survive without the need of sunlight, Ghost Pipe thrives in the dark, dense wet rainforest of the forest floor. Often tucked away beneath ferns and layers of decaying leaves. When Ghost Pipe is tinctured, it turns a very very dark black-purple. It is so magical to witness this white-translucent plant become a deep black purple. This ally is so delicate that even while it is being handled, or as it starts to wilt, it starts to turn black - hence the other common name, Corpse Plant.
🌑 Teachings and Uses of Ghost Pipe:
Ghost Pipe is a potent nervine, mostly used for it’s very deep pain relieving properties. It is known to be an extremely powerful ally when all other pain relieving plants aren’t cutting it, further enhanced when combined with other pain relievers such as Devil’s Club. It is also called upon to relieve serious cases of anxiety and oxidative stress. Ghost pipe has been utilized in cases of opiate withdrawal and extreme nerve pain. It is not a plant to take lightly and only a small amount is needed.
Ghost Pipe is truly a magical gift from the natural world. It blooms only for one week every year, spending the rest of the year completely underground. This represents its deep connection to the underworld. It thrives off the very roots beneath our feet. Its rarity and short blooming window encourages us to be in the moment. This ally is thought of as a conduit for the seen and unseen realms, channeling wisdom from the mushrooms, the mother, the trees and earth.
✨ Devil’s Club ~ also known as Devil's Walking Stick, is another deeply sacred plant native to the moist, dense rainforests of the Pacific Northwest. It is one of the most important shamanic medicines to the Indigenous tribes of this region. Magically, Devil’s Club has been called upon for strength and supernatural protection. Devil’s Club is a large understory shrub with a wicked presence that can grow up to a massive 17 feet tall! It has millions of extremely large, sharp, needle-like thorns/spines that can become embedded deep into the skin, causing irritation and even infections as they are hard to dig out. These spines represent how truly protective and sacred this plant is, as well as its demand to be respected. It also shows the ability it has to transcend the realms ~ for the plant world to pierce the veil of the human world. Protective gear, skill, patience and intention is required to scrape off the spines and retrieve the bright green/yellow medicine of Devil’s Club inner bark. This inner bark is what was infused to make this offering. Spicy and pungent, the ancient spirit of this plant is displayed through its intense, strong, wild flavor and presence in the forest.
🌑 Teachings and Uses of Devil’s Club:
Devil’s Club helps us create energetic boundaries around ourselves so that we are less affected by negativity & can grow more into our authentic energy. It is a very powerful ally for coughs, fevers, achy muscles, arthritis & inflammatory conditions. A powerful, fierce & sacred medicine known for healing trauma, calling in strength & safety while dancing between the worlds.
🌑 My first experience with Devil’s Club:
The first time I took Devil’s Club tincture was a few years ago during a plant meditation ceremony in the Oregon rainforest. A teacher of mine, a wise Elder, passed around various single plant tinctures and had us take a few drops, not telling us what the plant was. We fell into ceremony, singing, meditating and journaling our experience. I didn’t know the plant I had taken a tincture of, and my experience with Devil’s Club was one of the most intense experiences I have ever had with a plant. As I meditated I felt completely frozen in place, I had visions of large spikes all over my body - like a forcefield. I actually felt my entire body tingling, but a very blissful pain free, numbing sensation. I visualized large spikes radiating from me, from every direction they radiated out from my body, out of the room, out of the world, out into space and realms beyond. I felt my ancestors and the mycorrhizae in the forest floor beneath me. Frozen in place, the most tangible feelings of love, safety and connection rippled through my being that I was brought to tears. I felt beyond the veil, pain free and floating. The essence of the gods and spirit and planets and realms rippling through me. This experience is, to this day, one of the most powerful plant journeys. One that directly set me on my herbalism path.
🌑 Suggested uses: I find myself reaching for this ally during my Moontime, during the Sabbaths and during ritual. I love calling on this offering during the dark seasons of Autumn and Winter. This is a wonderful ally that only requires a few drops to help relieve intense pain and anxiety. It calls in intense, protective, wild energy, helping us tune into self and creativity, while helping break through blockages and build inner strength. Working with plants that are so unique like Ghost Pipe, and hold power and are even dangerous like Devil’s Club with its massive spines, help us remain mindful, humble, and teaches us patience. May this offering be an influential ally that connects you to the wild wisdoms of the realms within & beyond.
🌑 HARVESTING DISCLAIMER: Ghost Pipe and Devil’s Club should never be harvested from a thriving rainforest, and should only be harvested under the guidance of an elder and with permission. I had the absolute privilege of being invited to harvest from a forest that was being logged, and in that forest these allies lived. It is the only reason I am working with/able to offer this to you. I am very grateful to have harvested many medicines alongside my teacher whom passed last summer, and to have been able to make offerings with these allies. It is an honor to pass on this plant medicine before the forest/these plants were decimated. Therefore this batch is very limited and crafted with deep respect for these cultural allies.
🌑 PNW Ethically Wildcrafted Ingredients: Ghost Pipe & Devil's Club inner bark extracted in PNW mountain spring water & organic, non-gmo, GF cane alcohol. Ritually crafted during October's Full Moon.
