❣️ THE DELICIOUS HERBS IN THIS BREW:
I'm so excited to share about this new delicious shrub-switchel! Check out "how to use this nectar" below to learn about what a shrub and switchel is and ways to use this brew.
First I must say, this offering is so so so delicious! It's sweet, tangy & a little spicy, packed with plethora vitamins & minerals. Crafted from both fresh, wildcrafted Blackberry infused vinegar & cold pressed Blackberries that join a few other nourishing herbs and raw PNW mountain honey. Blackberries are prolific here in the PNW & these juicy berries possess a large amount of antioxidants, vitamin C, are high in fiber & may help boost brain function.
Joining the brew is fresh infused ginger root, which is an all around incredible ally for digestion, immune support and is known to help increase serotonin and dopamine levels. Wildcrafted freshly infused St. John's Wort marry into this mix, making this "nectar" the perfect sweet tangy remedy to combat the woes of the dark season. St. John's Wort like Blackberry, also bleed with red-womb mysticism. She’s known as the herb of "Seasonal Defective Disorder" due to her effect on our nervous system and ability to help recalibrate our brain chemistry. Her magic is her ability to bring us from darkness out in the light. She's anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, relaxes nervous tension, nerve damage, sore muscles & more.
The added spices of Cinnamon Bark, Star Anise, Smoked Black Peppercorn, Fennel Seed & Hibiscus are fantastic allies for all bodily systems especially the respiratory, circulatory & digestive systems. They also enhance and bring together not only the medicinal benefits but all the delicious flavors of this seasonal brew.
❣️ HOW TO USE THIS NECTAR:
A "Switchel" uses ginger as a base where a "Shrub" uses fruit as a base, both have an added sweetener (this case raw honey) as well as spices or other herbs. Since this brew has a fruit AND ginger base, it's a Shrub-Switchel!
Drinking vinegars (shrubs, switchels & oxymels) are a historic remedy that allows us to enjoy something delicious & deeply nourishing for our bodies. Shake & add 1 tbsp - 1 oz to any beverage, smoothie, tea or sparkling water. She's here as a treat with added medicinal benefits, helping to combat ails and boost the immune system. Her delicious flavors make her amazing to get creative with kitchen witch ideas! She's so yummy used like a dressing, on ice cream or dessert or as a marinade!
*This offering is ALCOHOL-FREE. It is naturally shelf stable with no added preservatives, but due to the fresh infusions, it is recommended to store in the refrigerator to extend shelf life and preserve the optimal freshness.
❣️ THE INSPIRATION & FAE FOLKLORE BEHIND THIS BREW:
Harvested on the New Moon of late summer, I was inspired to craft this brew that helps us embrace our Dark. I’ve been feeling a deep peace in my bones, a slower pace & like all the chaos of busy summer months is finding its place in our medicine. Blackberry is a protective ally of this Dark slow inner energy with her bleeding dark berries. You must move slowly around her with awareness, or you’ll end up severely hurt, tangled in her web of sharp relentless thorns.
Blackberry is a Venus ally of the Dark Feminine with defensive magic of many sorts. She holds profound significance in both European and Indigenous folklore. In European Folklore, she's deeply tied to the mystics of the Fae. Magical amulets were often made of Blackberry thorns for protection from evil spirits. From traditional Balkan magic, the Blackberry was known to house female supernatural spirits and Faeries.
An offering of bread and butter was often left under her arch - an offering to the Fae in order to bring in good fortune. It was said when crawling under her archway that made a loop we would enter in the realm of the Fae, where we can commune with those who have come before.
Indigenous People hold a lot of similar lore. And those of this region utilized the medicine of Blackberry root & leaves for women's troubles and her berries for respiratory woes. A syrup of her juicy berries was crafted and utilized to help soothe a sore throat, aid in digestive upsets, helping to detoxify the blood with her plethora of antioxidants. Her medicinal benefits are deeply increased by the vinegar, honey and added nourishing herbs.
May this rich brew help you feel connected to the Dark Feminine of the Fae Realms during this thinning veil.
